A troubled marriage makes for a trouble person – two troubled persons. And while many troubled marriages fail and end in the divorce court, there are many examples of a troubled marriage which recovers and goes on from strength to strength.

One of the best ways to help a troubled marriage is by visiting a trained counselor. There are many available and finding one which suits and is a good match may not be too difficult. But if you are struggling financially then finding free counseling may be difficult. But it is possible and here are two immediate sources.

• Local charities which provide emergency shelter, food and clothing will sometimes have a counseling service as well.
• Local churches likewise will often offer counseling services for couples in trouble.

Now there are issues with both of these sources. As far as the churches go, they may offer this service only to their members so if you are not a worshipper at a particular church, you may be excluded. Note that you could attend a small church but its headquarters would be the place to attend the counseling.

With the local charities the issue here with their free marriage counseling is availability. Unfortunately there is a big demand for the services of a free counselor and you may have a while to wait. That could mean disaster because your troubled marriage could end by the time your turn came round to see a counselor.

But by all means enter your name on the waiting-list. It might take weeks before you get an appointment but you’ll never get in until your name is on the list. If while waiting for an appointment, your marriage improves or fails completely, you need simply to notify the charity.

Another fact you need to consider is that counseling is rarely able to magically and instantly repair your troubled relationship. Often the counseling takes place over many sessions and can be a tough time for all. So by all means try and save your marriage and have expectations for a positive result but understand that there is often no quick-fix solution.

While you are waiting for a counseling session, you should continue looking for help. It is the proactive couple which has the best chance of saving their marriage. Look for sources of help by contacting online forums appropriate to marital support. Ask state and c

ouncil operated agencies if they can recommend a counselor. Your family doctor is another who may be able to make recommendations. Don’t sit back and allow your relationship to continue to suffer.

The secret is to obviously find that affordable counselor but that is not the only significant issue. You should also keep going until practical help arrives. It’s a good idea to have a trusted person you can contact when times are tough if only just to talk things through. You never know but the counseling solution could happen tomorrow and from someone quite close to your home so keep trying and hoping to save your marriage.

How Relationship Disagreements Can Make You Closer

If you are like me, you’ve found yourself standing in the aftermath of a firestorm called a fight. You feel burned, damaged. Bitterness has taken root. Your heart, once open, is now closed—protected behind armor so you can’t be hurt again. Although you bury the pain, it smolders like a burning ember and pollutes your love or marriage relationship forever. Or you split up.

Personally, it wasn’t until I got a bit older and looked at my bone yard of broken love relationships that I realized how important the issue of fair fighting is. There is nothing more important than how you fight or express your upset. How you handle conflicts can determine the course of your entire love or marriage relationship. It influences whether or not you are perceived as trustworthy and a safe person with whom to disagree.

In my practice as a therapist I have witnessed a veritable wasteland of love relationships, countless marriage relationships lost or damaged because people didn’t know how to fight fair. The result was unhappy homes, bitter divorces, and countless tears and frustration.

Here is a list of 10 Love, Marriage Relationship MUSTS for fair fighting. These rules are important and may require practice. In the heat of the moment, they may seem difficult to apply. You and your mate will succeed if you have the honest intention to clean up your relationship, because you can always go back and talk later when you are calmer and in a better space.

1. If you feel a slow burn, STOP! Often when you get mad it feels like an eruption. You feel a rush of anger or rage that sweeps your entire body and mind. It may feel like you lose your train of thought or you forget what you want to say. You want to explode at the other person. Stop! It’s not the right time to talk.

2. Remember this is not your enemy. Right now, your survival system sees your beloved as a threat, the enemy, and a source of pain. Only survival counts. So you may feel inclined to say anything, fight with all your might, win at all costs. It’s a big mistake!

3. Avoid mental/emotional associations with your love or marriage relationship that don’t serve you. When you

get upset you are “activated.” Your survival system has begun making associations, or links, between your beloved and those who hurt you in the past. An inner voice may be saying things like: “This is what all women do.” Or: “This is what my Dad used to do, and I don’t want to be in a relationship with my dad.”

4. Take a “time out.” Ask: “Am I too upset to resolve this right now?” If the answer is yes, you need a break and some distance. Notice, I didn’t say storm out. I didn’t say, slam the door, bolt to your car, and burn rubber as you speed away. Keep your head and say, “I am too upset to talk about this right now. I need a break and to get out of here for a little while. Let’s talk later.” Sometimes tiny skirmishes dissipate naturally. If you feel the anger dissipate naturally, let it go.

5. Stay on the topic at hand. “Emotional vomiting” is off limits. This is not an opportunity to unload all the upsets you have not been holding in. Let some things go. If you use this as a dumping ground you will start a painful fighting cycle with no end.

6. Let your partner save face. If you are fighting over who’s right and who’s wrong, you will both lose. In one couple’s counseling session, the woman kept correcting the man’s memory of the facts. Then she complained about how mean he was getting when he asserted his memory. She didn’t see that he needed room to save face and feel like he was right, too. She needed to drop the facts. Ask yourself, “Do I want a harmonious love relationship or to be right?”

7. Both partners must get a full turn. To start say: “OK, let’s take turns. You go first and I will listen, and then let you know what I have heard you say. When you are done, it will be my turn to speak.” If he says, “I am angry that you leave the counter dirty,” say, “What I hear you saying is that it makes you mad.” Then you can ask, “Why does this make you angry? How else does that make you feel?” When you have heard your partner’s point of you, it will be your turn to talk about your feelings. Make a sincere effort to fix upset areas.

8. Try to stand in your partner’s shoes and see the world from his/her point of view. Wanting to understand does not mean you are “giving in” or being weak. It means your love or marriage relationship comes first. You want to the bottom of the conflict so you can resolve it. Being understood is the number one diffusion technique in any conflict. It can prevent years of marriage counseling. You can say, “What I hear you saying is Ŕ Drop your pride and be willing to say that you apologize even if you don’t think you did anything wrong. Intentions are not always interpreted as they were meant. You say, “I am sorry, I do see how it could have come across that way.” Only then will they be open to hear your point of view.”

9. Offer a heart-felt apology. It doesn’t matter that you didn’t intend to do anything wrong if the other person in your marriage or love relationship feels offended. You can say, “I am sorry. I do apologize for that. I can see your point of view and imagine how that would feel.”

10. Do not under any circumstances call names. When you call your love a bitch, bastard, whore, asshole, idiot, stupid, and so on, you are being abusive. You may win the current battle but your marriage or romance will suffer. Don’t be surprised if you need marriage counseling or your love relationship suffers.

Keep in mind, both of you have a right to feel the way you do. What counts is being heard and understood. You friendship, love or marital relationship can grow, deepen and be a place of safety, love and expansion when you follow these simple rules.

1. Learning Lessons in Love and Commitment

It’s frightening how many of us repeat the same mistakes over and over. There are reasons and simple explanations for this. Many of us if not all of us want to be accepted and appreciated, encouraged, and adored. We often seek what we have had or did not have while growing up. We are attracted to familiarity. We may not like patterns of behaviors but somehow it empowers us to seek approval. It’s like we carry some kind of internal ‘relationships’ template and we try and apply that same pattern of behavior every time we are in an intimate relationship. When forming fresh relationships after divorce, throw out the inner template. Clearly it didn’t work for you last time. Why repeat the same things? Come at your new relationships with nothing but a desire to discover new ways of being together in love. Understand that a relationship is a journey of discovery. It’s an adventure that you navigate through. You’ll experience storms, tempests, hurricanes, fog, and times when it seems like you are becalmed and nothing is happening in the relationship. Hold to your destination: love and commitment. Be true to your guiding light: love. And enjoy the journey to commitment.

2. Breaking the Bonds that Tie Us

Moving out of your comfort zone is a huge step for many of us. Doing something out of the ordinary and can be uncomfortable. However, that is how we grow emotionally, spiritually, financially, and intellectually. In previous relationships, we may have heard time and time again, derogatory and demeaning comments enough times that we started to believe them. Breaking the emotional bondage and explore your thoughts and feelings and learning why we react the way we do is a key to having a successful relationship. Inside is where the magic of your life happens, not in the outer world. You’ve felt the pain of divorce and maybe you’ve deliberately numbed yourself to your feelings. That’s okay; it’s natural to protect yourself that way. Just realize that you fall in love and out of love in your head, in your thoughts and feelings about someone. As you can control your thoughts and manage your feelings, you have creative power over how your relationship feels to you. Right now, you could be in bliss if you wanted to. Or you could let your mind talk create an experience of pain and self-pity. It all depends on what thoughts and feelings you choose to focus on. When building new love relationships after divorce it pays to take responsibility for your thoughts and feelings. Nobody else can make you feel bad or make you feel good without your participation. You’re the one who chooses how to process what you are experiencing. When you experiment with this you will rapidly come to realize that you are free to be happily single if you choose to be or to enjoy wonderful, warm, passionate, affectionate relationships. You are the point of power in any relationship. Therefore you have 100% ability to create a wonderful relationship.

3. Cracking the Chemistry Code

By learning about chemistry and energy interactions you will improve your ability to navigate relationships after divorce. Learning boundaries will help facilitate your closeness or distance, your desire to be closer or that you need to more space. Give them too much space and not enough affection and the attraction between you will start to waiver. There’s a fine balance. And it’s an ever-changing dynamic. I learned in counseling school that there is no such thing as cause and effect. But rather, its multiple causes produces one effect. When you think you’ve cracked the code, the dynamic will change. Life’s like that. It’s designed to keep you on your toes — and keep you growing. The one thing we strive for is an organic relationship that is alive and grows unconditionally. Remember your romantic vision and your commitment to love as an idea and guiding principle, that way you will always find new, creative ways of building your love relationship. Like most things in life, wonderful marriages are earned through hard work, they don’t just happen. The greatest challenge for anyone is to have a successful relationship. They just don’t happen and they do take work. Being romantic and spontaneous does not make love last forever. Each person brings to a new relationship, heartaches and pain. We automatically look for signs as if we are pre-conditioned to find fault and errors. We are guarded and on high alert! In your post divorce relationship, we should treat our relationship as the ultimate self-improvement program. Each day challenges you to be creative and innovative in your romantic and loving gestures. If you take Love as a characteristic you want to build into your nature, and practice being more loving every day, especially with your mate, you will be well on your way to creating a blissful love life.

4. Get to Know Thyself!

All of this will come together if you do one important task. Get to Know Thyself! You may think that this is odd. However, men especially have a difficult time expressing themselves. Women are always trying to figure us out. But the good news is…you can learn about yourself through free online assessments. There are several assessments I have linked in my website that you can glean from. The more you understand your psychological self, the easier it will be to share it with others. The happy and healthier your next relationship will be. Through learning and understanding your own behaviors, you can move into the next relationship without any apprehension. By understanding your own relationship development, you do not have to be in the relationship guessing game. You can learn about your love languages, your personality styles, your IQ, personal development, career assessments, etc, and it is fun to do. Through these self-assessments, you will learn what you are attracted too and what which personality styles would provide the most challenging. By knowing thyself, it makes it easier to know others and to feel the love we want. Understanding why things happened and forgiving our past; breaking the bonds that hold us down; finding the chemistry in the next relationship; and learning from self-assessments. All of these things will give you the tools to be successful in your next relationship. That secret is….selflessness!

Janet Evanovich was born Janet Schneider in South River, New Jersey on April 22, 1943. She studied art for four years at Rutgers’ Douglass College of Art. She married Peter Evanovich in 1964 and they have two children, Peter and Alexandra. She became a home maker and after developing an allergy to pigment, started writing romance novels in her thirties using the pseudonym, Steffie Hall.

After many failed attempts at being published, she took a secretarial job with a temp agency. A few months later she got a call to publish “Hero at Large”. She quit her temp job and started writing romances novels full time.

Later, Janet started writing in the mystery genre and in 1994; her first Stephanie Plum book was published. The central character, Stephanie Plum, is an inept bounty hunter. These light-hearted mysteries, with a touch of romance, will keep you laughing and wondering when the next book will hit the shelf. Janet claims that, “If we can laugh at something, we can face it.”

She sold the movie rights for these books to Columbia Tristar, but so far no movies have been made. Janet said she had envisioned Sandra Bullock as Stephanie Plum, but Sandra Bullock is getting too old now.

The family moved to New Hampshire in 1995 where she started her own company, called Evanovich, Inc. Her husband runs the business, her son, Peter does all things financial and daughter, Alex created and runs the website and writes the newsletter.

Janet has received many awards for her Romance, mysteries and thrillers. In 2010, her and her daughter will be coming out with some graphic novels for Dark Horse Comics. They will be based on her Alexandra Barnaby series. In an interview she said, “It allows me to feed my Nascar addiction and comic book addiction all at the same time.”

So, extra care should be taken as to see that, whatever steps you take must not in any way hurt her more emotionally. A slight trigger can destroy the already broken relationship forever. Whatever you plan to do first analyze the pros and cons and then carry out. Trying to impress her or showing off your self pity will not work.

Making useless steps to catch her attention or begging to get her back is not the right way of approach. You have your self esteem remember that and play safe. Don’t try to show off too much enthusiasm in getting back. Try to play cool and stay away from her side and allow her to wonder where you are. Give her time to start missing you just like you do. When the stage is all set and when she needs you its time to enter and then impress her with all your might. Overall taking the right attitude and choosing the right action is the magic formula.

Many might plan a great get back but might approach at the wrong time. Or at the right time they might goof up and end up like standup comedians. Don’t bounce on her the moment the breakup happens try to stay cool and off her vicinity for some time and then start planning. So be very careful and try with all your might but always remember that slow and steady wins the race.

My knee jerk response to this request was, “the dynamics are the same.” Battering is battering is battering. An abuse dynamic that is long standing or discovered later in life resembles an abuse dynamic earlier in life.

If it is, indeed, “intimate partner violence,” it will carry all of the defining characteristics of: controlling and possessive behavior, externalization of blame, lack of empathy, isolation, and the use of battering to establish and maintain unequal power in the relationship.

While this is true, the way the abuse dynamic expresses itself may vary from immature adolescent style to a more mature disposition, depending on the age of the people entangled in the abusive relationship. And the domestic violence survivor’s experience may be quite different depending on her age.

Here is how…

1) The mature woman has internalized the multifaceted domestic abuse survivor fabric into the core of her being, as she has worn this cloak for decades. This poses a greater commitment to change, because often it will involve giving up everything that she may think defines herself.

Whereas, the woman with only a short period of her dating or married life may see this “bad” relationship as more easily dispensable even though she, too, knows the dangerous and difficult burden of her exit.

2) The mature battered woman has more ties, more history, and sees her life with less road ahead of her.

Whereas, a younger woman-while entangled in the same battering dynamic-measures what she lives relative to the potential life ahead.

So, for the woman in her fifties, sixties or even seventies, it’s about now. And for the woman in her twenties and thirties, it’s about later.

3) The mature woman has sufficient resources to start her live over, though she may not believe it. And the younger, less experienced woman may also feel she has fewer resources, less life experience, less foundation on which to build a new life.

Resources can be rallied up at any point along life’s road. And so when I hear middle-age women declare defeat because they “can’t” compete with a younger workforce, I say, “You have not found your inner resources.”

If you are a mature woman in or leaving an abusive relationship, know there is more ahead when you give yourself the opportunity to find and become the person that you may have been conditioned to ignore. You can become the self-sufficient, self- respecting, whole person, with the dignity that you long for at any point along life’s path.

Fact: Taking care of yourself emotionally, physically and spiritually will help you be a better spouse/partner.

Trap to avoid: There are many different forms of self-neglect (working too much, repeatedly ignoring signs that you’re not feeling well, consuming too much alcohol, not getting enough sleep…) that will adversely impact your ability to be a present, reliable and responsive spouse/partner.
